Unfortunately the previous game had over ran so the warm up started in the dance studio with some focussed work on defending and driving on to the ball. We set up our game plan of trying to break down and restrict the movement of the GA, who from experience was the playmaker. I think we asked the attack to work triangles into the circle – but my memory is hazy. This team had only beaten us by 5 last time, despite them being top of the table so we were confident with our recent improvements, of a potential win. We were bolstered by Suz and super sub Annari who both ended up playing two matches that day. Thanks!
We started strong and at one point in the 1st quarter we were up by 4 goals. We managed to turn the ball over and get it safely into Wai and Suz who were netting them easily. They clawed it back and at the end of the first quarter it was 11-11.
We reminded ourselves of the game plan to try and restrict their  GA’s (the playmaker) movement by trying to double up on her and then go for the intercept on the second phase. We managed to double and restrict her movement but not pick off that second phase. We worked hard in defence to keep them moving and out of their comfort zone. In attack the movement was good and we finished the quarter up by one (21- 20). We swapped Annari on to GK as a precaution against my slightly weakened knee.
In the second half their defence turned up the heat to intercept balls going in to the circle which restricted the number of shooting opportunities we had. Our defence tried  a few things out to break down their attacking movement which resulted in lots of intercepts and turned over ball. We finished the 3rd quarter 2 down (29-31) and the final one 3 down (37-40). We took solace from a hard fought game and the fact we still took some points off the top team.
