Match Report: NUNS 1 v Carlton (Kingston Div 2), 21st Sept

Squad: SJW, Sophie, (Return of the) Lozza, Jennie P, Gilly Mac, Laura, Rosie, Suz, Becky, Marisa

We arrived in Chertsey, with the lucky few in Sophie’s car having been entertained by fit again Lozza’s story time, and proceeded to warm up with a jog around the car park, discussing the poor use of space of a roundabout in the centre of the car park.  Having been promoted to Div 2 this season Carlton were an unknown quantity and we didn’t quite know what to expect…

You would have thought a surprise visit from Sally Mac, Hamish and 5 week old Rory would be enough to soften any broody NUN but that would have been a severe underestimation……after a quick and focused warm up we went on court with the ambition to go out with all guns blazing; play our own game, not give our opposition a chance to settle, score from all our centre passes and convert every turn over.

And we didn’t do too badly, ending the first quarter 16-4 up.

The defence were on fire, and interceptions were coming from all over the court.  The shooters hardly missed and following a NUNS turnover in our defensive circle the ball moved sublimely through the centre of the court to GS, passing through every player, almost as if it had had been the focus of training on Tuesday. Gilly Mac was a little beside herself.

With great depth of squad we switched combinations at every quarter with fresh legs always ready to come onto court and we didn’t let the pressure on our opposition drop.  We ensured, despite fantastic movement and height in our attacking circle, we didn’t simply lob in the high ball and towards the end of the game focused in on triangles around the attacking circle, feeding into the shooters and keeping the work rate up while legs tired.

The quarter time score breakdown shows our continued pressure on the opposition but doesn’t really reflect the intensity or the match or the work-rate needed to maintain our lead.

Scores:

Q1: 16-4

Q2: 36-7

Q3: 52-17

Q4: 69-25

An excellent match away from home, maintaining the 1sts unbeaten start to the season and providing a great build up to another double header next weekend.
